WHAT IS TO THE MARKET (TTM)?
TO THE MARKET economically empowers vulnerable women through artisan enterprise. We showcase handmade goods made exclusively by proud and passionate artisans who have overcome the perils of abuse, conflict, and disease. By assisting local partners around the world in bringing these goods “to the market,” we take an active role in equipping the survivor’s that they employ with economic independence, while raising awareness of the challenges that they face.
HOW DOES TTM WORK?
TTM’s unique, three-pronged social enterprise model includes:
- Promoting survivor-made goods TO THE MARKET via multiple distribution channels, including pop-up shops, custom sourcing, retail partnerships, and our online marketplace.
- Offering a platform for survivors and their champions to share their stories with a new, larger audience of eyes, ears, and hearts including through TTM’s Stories and Huffington Post blogs.
- Providing tailored services to our Local Partners with resources such as trend forecasting and basic mental health resources to improve production and management.
WHAT TYPE OF VULNERABLE WOMEN ARE THE FOCUS OF TTM?
TTM works with proud and passionate artisans who have overcome the perils of abuse, conflict, and disease. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to; survivors of abuse, such as survivors of domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse, and human trafficking; survivors of conflict, such as war widows, refugees, or persons living in conflict/post conflict states; or survivors of disease, including populations living with HIV/AIDS, leprosy, or physical disabilities. In order to be considered a conflict or post-conflict country, TTM uses three lists: (1) World Bank’s Fragile and Conflict Affected Situations List; (2) OECD’s Fragile State’s List; and (3) the United Nations’ peacekeeping operations list.
WHAT IS TTM'S ROLE IN ECONOMICALLY EMPOWERING SURVIVORS?
TTM partners with existing social enterprises and non-profits that have already set up shop, hired, and trained survivors to produce beautiful handicrafts. We call these organizations Local Partners. By beginning our partnership at this stage in the Local Partners' development, we believe that we are able to more efficiently and effectively scale our impact. We aim to economically empower survivors by partnering with the Local Partners that employ them to:
- Provide additional distribution channels for their survivor-made products.
- Amplify their good work through online and offline platforms.
- Trend forecasting and sales analyses to inform production decisions.
- Basic mental health resources to increase awareness of common mental health dynamics that a survivor may experience.
- Combined market power.
IS TTM A NON-PROFIT?
TTM is a social enterprise legally incorporated as a for-profit. We believe that all people have an innate desire to be contributing members of their community, and that the dignity of work and the opportunity to seek economic independence is the best "gift" that we can give anyone. and ultimately what the human spirit desires. We believe that conscious consumerism and taking a market-driven approach to working with survivor populations is the most sustainable and efficient way to achieve our shared dream of economically empowering the most vulnerable.
I WANT TO GET INVOLVED! HOW CAN I HELP?
Wonderful! The more champions of survivors that there are, the more awareness we can create for their stories. And the more awareness, the more impact! There are tons of ways to get involved from the micro to the macro. Please visit our Spread TTM’s Mission page.
CAN I ADVERTISE WITH TO THE MARKET?
We would love that! Please visit our Advertise with Us page for details.
CAN I TAILOR MY SEARCH TO A SPECIFIC CAUSE, ETC.?
You can find goods based on the organization’s name; the country where it is made; the type of product; or the type of survivor that the organization is employing. This will allow you to suit your search to the causes you wish to support.
IF I'M BUYING FROM MULTIPLE VENDORS DOES THIS MEAN MULTIPLE PURCHASES?
No. TTM is one market consisting of many vendors; therefore, all purchases are processed by TTM in one transaction. Each vendor has different shipping procedures, so shipping costs will vary from vendor to vendor, but the total purchase will show up as one transaction on your credit card.
