Handmade Pink Orange Green Banana Fiber Mary Basket (Uganda)

Description + Story

This item is exclusively handcrafted by Mary, the oldest (74 years) and most honored member of our initiative of impoverished Ugandan widows. Her specialty is weaving using only banana fiber leaves found on her modest property. Her baskets have many uses: napkins on your dining room table, outgoing mail at the front door or simply a place for keys and wallet or your jewelry next to your sink.

No longer feeling like a burden to her son who has supported her for many years, Mary is distinguishing herself as a team leader. As her basket-weaving and leadership skills emerge and her income increases, Mary is realizing her life is about to change. She is a superb example of the benefits of our partner initiative the Namugongo Good Samaritan Project (NGSP)*.
